On the Dirty Side this week…

Sometimes an idea takes shape and you just hope events conspire to allow you to use the idea.

Well this was the case with this weeks episode artwork.

The prior week we saw Jaws hit the 50th anniversary of it’s cinematic release. With it being a work of Spielberg it obviously came with a direct link to the Austrian GP which, as luck would have it, was the next race after the anniversary.

So, could we get events on track that would allow the re-imagining of the iconic poster?

There was the obvious title of Wars if we had some spicy action between say Max & a McLaren.

That didn’t happen and there was no real beef anywhere to shoehorn that title in.

As the main battle seemed to be between the Papaya boys and we were treated to 15 or so laps of great racing between them we decided to use a bit or artistic license and convert Papaya Rules into Papaya Laws.

Gotta say we were pretty happy with the result…

Yeah, there were a couple of scruffy edits around the bubbles but we still rank this as one of our fav episode covers.

Aside from caring about what the cover looks like, there was a whole race to review as well as preview Silverstone so I guess we better drop the link here in case you’ve not listened yet.

Then join us down in the marbles for a bit of F1 movie chat.

In the marbles

Diving into the marbles that make up the dirty side of the track is where you’ll find some subscriber only content!

We’ve both now seen the F1 movie so fair warning there may be some spoilers ahead if you’ve not seen it or heard about it.

We’ll do a proper episode on this but essentially we both loved this film!

Yes, you need to disconnect your F1 fact checker though before you go in.

However, if you can watch a film where a guy gets bitten by a spider and then can climb walls without questioning how realistic this is then you should be just fine suspending your disbelief for what you’ll see in Brad Pitt’s latest offering.

What will you need to ignore?

We got you covered - here is our list of things you just need to let slide and sit back to enjoy the experience

1 - Race weekends only contain races. No mention is ever given to practice or qualy being a thing. Nope, you just turn up and race. Assume you start from the grid based on the order you arrived at the circuit.

2 - When you do start a race you can achieve Mario Kart level overtakes all before the first corner. Think you need to run over the mushroom first though ;-)

3 - Errrmmm, you can get away with race tactics even K-Mag wouldn’t try (although we did totally love how that’s basically referenced as well)

4 - You can crash into a barrier enough to cause so much damage you need a red flag to repair it yet your car is still drive-able back to the pits and then easily repairable in ten minutes. Logan would have loved this reality. Sorry Logan.

5 - Cars can drive so freaking fast on slicks in the rain that they will get airborne if they crash.

6 - Apparently if you are a team and haven’t won a race you will be sold. Scoring points is not enough for a new team, you must win a race or you’re toast.

And we’re sure you can name a bunch of other things that just need to be blissfully filed under “don’t care”.

If you can do this then you are in for a great ride as it’s just a classic summer blockbuster that isn’t trying to be anything else. Action scenes are awesome, real F1 setting & cameos are excellent, and it just delivers a classic racing movie.

Will it win an Oscar for it’s story line or acting? Nope.

But that’s not the point - it is what it tries to be, so as long as you can make peace with that maybe you’ll be like us and have enjoyed it/will enjoy it.

However, there will be folk that can’t do that and that’s OK.

They just probably hated it.

Lots.
